A Family Affair

Today I want to share with a very special photoshoot I was commissioned to do for two incredible actors, Brian Sutherland and his daughter Rhythm. I met Brian and Rhythm when I was casting for my first short film, and immediately fell in love with their energy and the dynamic that they had between them. When Brian approached me about a shoot that would feature both he and Rhythm, I knew I wanted to create something special that would showcase not only their range as actors, but also highlight this very special relationship.

Brian, who teaches acting and specializes in the genre of clown, brings a unique and humorous perspective to his characters, often infusing them with irony and self-deprecation. Meanwhile, Rhythm, at just 13 years old, is already following in her father’s footsteps and forging her own path in the acting world. Through four carefully crafted sets, the pair explored a range of emotions, from bonding and camaraderie to role reversal, tension, and humor.

As a commercial artist, having such creative control is not always possible, so this shoot was particularly rewarding for me as I got to put on many hats and fully immerse myself in every aspect of the creative process. From conceptualizing the ideas to designing and building the sets, styling the talent, and photographing and retouching the final images, every step was an exciting challenge. I was truly honored that Brian and Rhythm trusted me to me to produce something that felt authentic to me while honoring their talents.
